Create a User-Friendly Closet

Maintain a neat and inviting wardrobe with these expert tips
Woman’s Day – August 1, 2011

Clear out the closet clutter once and for all! From installing proper lighting to an orderly hanging system, discover easy tricks that will help deter mess and keep your storage space easy to manage.

1. Stop stacking so high.

“If you have to pull a shirt from a stack of 12, the chances of the pile staying neat are zero,” says Melissa Homer, chief cleaning officer at MaidPro, a cleaning franchise in Boston. Instead, use stackable wire shelves.

2. Make backward the new forward.

Turn all the hangers in your closet backward, and each time you wear an item and return it to the closet, flip its hanger forward, suggests professional organizer Amanda Wiss of Urban Clarity in Brooklyn, New York. “You’ll see what you’re actually wearing.” After six months, consider donating the clothes that are still hanging backward.

3. Light the space.

You can’t know what you have if you can’t see it. Install motion-sensitive lights.

4. Freshen the air.

Smelly closet? First, find the source. “It could be something other than your shoes-like a dead mouse. You’d be surprised,” says Farina. If it is shoes, buy cedar shoe inserts, which sit just inside shoes and absorb moisture, which is what’s causing the smell.

  1. The closets are probably one of the most forgotten parts of house cleaning. These are wonderful tips! I never thought about switching the hangers like that to see what I’m actually wearing regularly.
